Introduction to Partner Visas

The Australian government is keen to allow Australian Permanent Residents, Australian Citizens or Eligible New Zealand Citizens in Australia who are in a genuine and committed relationship with an overseas partner to begin a new life together in Australia.

Overseas nationals who are in a relationship with an Australian Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or Eligible New Zealand Citizens in Australia may be eligible to migrate to Australia under the Partner Visa Stream of the Family Migration Program.

Australian Citizens and Permanent Residents and even Eligible New Zealand Citizens in Australia must sponsor an overseas partner (spouse, fiancé, de facto partner or interdependent partner) to migrate to Australia under this visa stream.

Overseas partners must either be married, engaged to, or in a de facto (common law) ongoing and genuine relationship with an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or Eligible New Zealand citizen.

If in a de facto or interdependent relationship of at least 12 months duration with an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident than applicants may apply for a visa to travel to and remain in Australia on the basis of your relationship being genuine and ongoing.

For 2008-2009 some 42,500 Partner Visas are allocated. This includes spouse, fiancé and interdependent. Net outcome as places taken by provisional visa holders who do not subsequently obtain permanent visas are returned to the Migration Program in the year that the temporary visas expire.
